AUS vs BAN: Australia defeat Bangladesh easily by an innings and 51 runs on day 2 of the second test match
Australia needed just half an over after Tea to complete a commanding innings-and-51-run victory over Bangladesh in the Mackay Test, finishing the match inside two days and levelling the series 1-1. Mitchell Starc once again struck early in the second innings, taking 4 for 39 to finish with a match ten-wicket haul. Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon claimed three wickets each as Bangladesh were bowled out for 95, following their first-innings total of just 64.
Mitchell Starc bags a 10 wicket haul
Hosts Australia added 45 runs to their overnight 165 to finish with 210, securing a significant lead of 146 runs that proved more than sufficient against insipid Bangladesh. After losing a couple of early wickets in the day, Cameron Green – unbeaten on 51 overnight – added 38 valuable runs for the ninth wicket partnership with Lyon, who chipped in a handy 32 not out to propel the side past the 200-run mark. Shoriful Islam added a seventh wicket to his tally to register the best figures by a Bangladeshi pacer in Tests.
Starc took the new ball and was among the wickets in his second over itself, striking off successive deliveries to send back Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque for 1 and 0 respectively. Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto denied him a hat-trick, but Pat Cummins struck soon after at the other end to take out opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim, reducing the visitors to 24/3.
Shanto was the fourth Bangladesh batter to depart, having made 31 of his team’s 51 runs when Lyon joined the wicket-taking action. The collapse continued through the second session, with none of the lower-order batters able to reach double figures.
Litton Das became Starc’s tenth wicket of the match, while Cummins struck again in consecutive overs to remove Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud. Lyon then polished off the tail three balls into the final session, completing his three-wicket haul and dismissing Bangladesh for just 95 to seal a dominant innings victory.
