Yashasvi Jaiswal scores a vicious 173 as India dominates West Indies on Day 1 of the 2nd test match

West Indies endured yet another tough day in the field as Yashasvi Jaiswal dominated with an unbeaten 173 on Day 1 in Delhi. At No. 3, Sai Sudharsan made the most of the favorable conditions and the lackluster opposition, combining with Jaiswal for a 193-run partnership for the second wicket. Apart from two superb deliveries from Jomel Warrican that brought the only wickets, the visitors offered little resistance.

Shubman Gill, captaining for his seventh Test, won his first toss and opted to bat in ideal conditions. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal began cautiously, scoring just 29 runs in the first hour while playing 60 dot balls from the opening 72 deliveries. Anderson Phillip, replacing Johan Layne, generated some seam movement and produced the only half-chance of the session with an LBW appeal that was overturned on umpire’s call. After drinks, India’s batters upped the tempo, with Jaiswal driving Phillip and Justin Greaves crisply, while Rahul flicked boundaries and lofted Jomel Warrican for a 81-metre six over the leg side.

Warrican responded with a sharply turning delivery that deceived Rahul, who was stumped comfortably by Tevin Imlach. Notably, the two balls before the dismissal turned 2.7 and 0.8 degrees respectively, while the wicket-ball spun a massive 8.1 degrees. Sai Sudharsan then walked in under some pressure to perform at No. 3 and got an easy start, flicking a low full toss from Warrican to the boundary.

With Jaiswal continuing to dominate, the second-wicket partnership gathered momentum, and India reached lunch at a solid 94 for 1. Jaiswal kickstarted the second session by cutting width offered by Jayden Seales for a four behind point. He hit two more in the same over to reach his half-century while also taking India past the 100-run mark.

West Indies appeared completely out of rhythm in the second session as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan maintained a brisk scoring rate, bringing up a 100-run partnership in just 141 balls. Since Jaiswal’s Test debut in July 2023, only Joe Root has been part of more century stands in the format. While Jaiswal displayed his trademark aggression, Sudharsan also settled in, aided by the spinners’ inconsistent lengths. Before Tea, Jaiswal completed his seventh Test hundred—only Sachin Tendulkar had scored more (11) before the age of 24.

Sudharsan, who was dropped on 58, couldn’t make the most of his reprieve and fell 13 runs short of a maiden Test century, once again to Jomel Warrican, whose delivery turned sharply by 6.4 degrees. However, that breakthrough did little to shift momentum, as captain Shubman Gill joined Jaiswal to ensure India finished the day without further setbacks.

After scoring freely in the middle session at over four runs per over, India eased up slightly in the final hour, though Jaiswal continued to dominate. Known for converting his starts into big scores—four of his previous six centuries were 150-plus, including two doubles—he played his shot of the day in the 88th over, a flawless cover drive threading the off-side field. By stumps, he remained unbeaten on 173, steering India to a commanding 318 for 2 alongside Gill.

Brief Scores: India 318/2 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 173*, Sai Sudharsan 87; Jomel Warrican 2-60) vs West Indies
